John Manjiro Speech Contest - 2017

中学生と高校生18名が大会に参加しました。

18 students from Junior High and High Schools took part in the contest.

Many of the students may have known something of the Manjiro story
before they began preparing
but listening to their speeches I sensed that they were all deeply effected
and motivated by what they learned about Manjiro.

生徒の多くはスピーチを書く前から万次郎のストーリーを
何となく知ってはいても、
万次郎のことを深く研究することで、
彼ら自身が深く考えさせられ、
やる気が起こったと感じさせらるようなスピーチでした。

Some light entertainment helped pass the time,
as the judges discussed among themselves
which contestants deserved which prize.

審査委員たちが受賞参加者についての協議をしている間、
軽いエンターティメントが場をつないでいました。

今回の大会のために特別に作られた
万次郎についての歌の演奏もありました。

The top two prize winners will be going to
Fairhaven in Massachusetts to attend the
John Manjiro Festival and learn more about
the town where Manjiro lived and studied in the US.
受賞者の上位2名は
マサチューセッツ州フェアヘーブで開催される
ジョン万祭りに参加し、万次郎が暮らし学んだアメリカの町
について学ぶ機会を得ました。
