Catacombes de Paris

We are constantly shown the terror of death through the media.
The news delivers death 24/7: Ebola & earthquakes
and another thousand killed in Palestine.
The TV brings us vampires & zombies, gladiatorial death,
death in battle, death in the hospital.
Due to the constraints of censors and of time these are "clean" deaths
and terrifyingly instantaneous.
This over-exposure de-sensitizes us to death
and also it takes away how precious life is.

What I brought away from the catacombs was a sense of life being built on death:
"now" built on previous "nows".
We cannot escape death and those who attempt to, endure a living death.

I'm not saying we can be happy about it but we can accept it and see it as a part of life.
We should be aware of the limits to our time here in this life on a personal level.
Aware but not fearful of natural death.
When that time comes, it comes.
At the same time, being aware of how precious life is,
how close we all stand to the doors of the "empire of death",
we need to hold accountable
all those responsible for un-natural,
man-made death,
whether in Missouri, Gaza or anywhere else.
To heighten this awareness,
I think the momento-mori a useful tool.
